Frequently Asked Questions

  • Where do I start my SEO strategy?

Your SEO strategy should start with doing persona research. Figure out who is your target audience and then what kind of keywords they are likely searching for when looking to buy the products/services that you offer online. Then from there use SEMRush to find the sites that rank very well for those keywords and examine their strategy and pages that they have.

  • What is a SERP? And What is an organic search result?

SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page, which is the "results page" of the query that you enter into Google. When Google first came out, this page was just 10 links to websites that Google felt best satisfied your query, but overtime Google has added different types of results to the page such as map results, image results, videos, and more. These placements are called "organic results" because you don't pay to get placed in them but rather earn your placement, unlike Google's ads, which also appear on the page but you must pay to play.

  • What is on-page SEO?

On-page SEO means that you focus on optimizing the on-page elements of your site, as opposed to the technical elements or inbound links. This includes metadata like optimizing your title tags or descriptions as well as the on-page copy and images and outbound links.

  • What is keyword research?

Keyword research is the process of figuring out what keywords your target audience is typing into Google to find businesses or products like yours. In the past SEOs use to focus a lot on ranking individual keywords, but now a days this really should be called "Topic/Page Research" as each page can rank for lots of keywords. At the end of the day, your job as the SEO is to advise the content team on how to optimize pages or what page to create in order to increase the rankings of various keywords that your target audience is typing into Google.

  • How long will it take to see increases in traffic?

That depends greatly on your starting point, your available resources, your overall strategy, and competitiveness of the industry you're in. If for instance you are a new site and are going after the term ""life insurance"" without much resources, you probably will never rank in the top 10 which means you won't get any traffic. But if you're a new site and going after ""life insurance for vegans"" you have higher chances of success even with limited resources, and could start potentially ranking for the term tomorrow with a single blog post. Or if you're an established site with a lot of authority but have some major technical SEO bugs to fix, you'll probably recover your rankings quickly after fixing those problems. With all that said, if you just want to know if you're campaign is heading in the right direction I would advise you to track how your chosen keywords change in rank from top 100 to top 50 to top 10 etc rather than traffic. This kind of portfolio approach to tracking your campaign will help you identify if it's working or not way before you receive traffic, which could take 1 - 2 years depending on the keywords you choose.

  • How Does Mobile-First Indexing Work?

Mobile-first indexing is exactly what it sounds like. It just means that the mobile version of your website becomes the starting point for what Google includes in their index, and the baseline for how they determine rankings. If you monitor crawlbot traffic to your site, you may see an increase in traffic from Smartphone Googlebot, and the cached versions of pages will usually be the mobile version of the page. So if you have a terrible mobile experience but a great desktop experience you may want to focus on fixing the mobile experience to improve your rank.
