Course Description

  • play 13 Videos
  • time 1.3 Hours

In this course, you won’t just learn how to create text animation, but rather the fundamentals and understanding of animation that lies behind. Using the principles of animation, such as squash & stretch, as well as the laws of physics, you will get a better understanding of how to make animation get a sense of weight. That includes learning why and when to use certain techniques, and not just how to use them. The course is for any skill level - trained professionals that want to dive deeper and learn new techniques, or beginners that want to get started in the field.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I add text effects in After Effects?

"Text animation in After Effects can feel quite complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s all about finding the right techniques and effects to make your text stand out from the rest. You don’t want the animation to feel bland, and like everything else, so you have to start looking at alternative ways of doing things. Using speed, match cuts where shapes turn to letters, squash & stretch, and the echo effect to your advantage, you suddenly get something that almost looks magical. People have to replay the animation multiple times, even to understand how it’s possible. This is the reaction from people you want when animating text, and it’s ultimately what you should be striving for. Jaws dropping, eyes widening and eyebrows raising - all wondering if you may be a wizard."

  • How do you make text dissolve in after effects?

"When you have spent hours animating text, you often overlook how it should disappear from the screen again. Some people even reverse the animation or just leave it be, but this often looks very rushed or out of place. One of my favorite ways to make the text go away is quite simple. I call it the blinking effect, and it is exactly what it sounds like. The letters start blinking randomly in different colors, - and at last, they disappear. When doing this dissolve effect, the most important aspects are randomness and offsetting. If all letters blink the same way with the same timing, it isn’t very interesting. If you on the other hand, give them a random offset, you turn something robotic into a beautiful animation. Most often, the simplest solutions are the most effective."

  • How do you make a smooth transition in after effects?

Transitions can be quite tricky, especially if you want them to feel smooth and not abrupt. If a transition is done right, you barely notice it, - and this is the exact purpose of it. An object is going from one state to another without you realizing how it just happened. When working with transitions, and especially regarding one object morphing to another, - its speed, placement and shape are your friends. If a basketball is laying on the floor, and you suddenly switch it to a football, it looks abrupt, and it will stand out to people. If you instead throw the basketball up into the air, and switch it to the football right as it hits the ground again, no one will notice the transition. This is all about finding the point where the basketball has the highest speed and using that to hide the switch. The other reason this will work is that basketball and football both have the same round shape when placed on top of each other. If you tried switching the basketball to a tennis bat, you probably wouldn’t get the same result."
